Chocolate Chase 10k

IMG_20130412_171622_634My parents joined us for the Chocolate Festival this year, so it was the first year I didn’t have to ride my bike from the finish to the start of the race. The race is point-to-point from the airport to the center of town, and there is no shuttle. We usually have to do some race morning maneuvering of people, bike and car so that we have a car at the finish line. Not this year, though, thanks to my parents!

It was cold and windy when we got to the airport. We registered, then headed outside for a mile warm-up. Then back inside, to stay warm.

IMG_20130413_090548_343There was a good turn out. The race director said that they had 130 preregistered for the race and 120 more registered race morning, which was twice what they’d had the previous year. It did seem like a bigger crowd.


We lined up about a quarter of the way back, and took off running together. We’d both said we were planning to run fast, but not really race because we wanted to save our energy for the marathon next weekend. Kurt was also concerned about his knee, which had been bothering him ever since the Charlottesville 10 Miler.

It’s a hilly course through beautiful countryside. The first two miles are mostly uphill. Kurt and I kept up what felt like a fast-ish pace. I had turned the auto-lap feature on my Garmin off for a track workout earlier in the week, and had forgotten to turn it back on, so I was not able to see my mile splits. I hate it when I do that!

There were times when it felt like I was taking it easy, and times when it felt like I was pushing pretty hard. That probably had more to do with the hills and the wind than with our pace.

With about two miles left to go, Kurt picked up the pace a little, and since we’d been running together the whole way (and I didn’t feel terrible), I did too. I probably wouldn’t have, though, if he hadn’t been there.

We finished together in just under 49 minutes.

It’s a roller-coaster of a course, but with a nice down-hill finish.

Charlottesville 10 Miler

IMG_20130315_185102_405I think it’s time for a reality check. I haven’t made any of the time goals I’ve set for myself for the past year and this year’s Charlottesville 10 Miler was no exception. I wanted to break 80 minutes. I’ve run a half marathon at that pace, so I thought I should be able to run 10 miles at that pace. I guess I need to face the fact that I’m just not as fast as I used to be. I’ve had to take a lot of time off in the last couple of years for injuries, and although I’ve finally been healthy enough to train fairly consistently for a few months, I’m still not back to where I was.

It was cold, wet and DARK when we arrived at the JPJ on race morning. I was happy that we could wait inside, and that we would not have to stand outside in the cold waiting for a port-a-john.

Just as Kurt and I stepped outside to do our warm-up, it started to rain. We did just a half mile warm up then went back inside to wait for the start.

It was still dark and raining even harder as we headed to the starting line.


I was getting wet, but I’ve been much colder waiting for a race to start. Other than the rain, it seemed like pretty good running weather.

There was no singing of the National Anthem and no gun to mark the start of the race. Or, at least, I didn’t hear anything. At some point everybody in front of me started running, so I did too.

My first mile was, by far, my slowest mile of the entire race. At 8:40, it was also pretty far from my 8:00 goal. My next few miles were faster, and I was feeling pretty good. I knew I still wasn’t at my goal pace, but I wasn’t confident enough to run the early miles any faster.

The hardest part of the race for me, was the uphill stretch on Main Street around the beginning of mile 9. Just as I was approaching the steepest part, I heard a guy behind me say “We’ve kept up an 8:20 pace from the start. Not bad for a couple of 36 year-olds.” Hmmmph. 8:20? That’s better than I thought I was doing. I had switched to my “B” goal, which was to set a PR. I’d set the bar very low with my 1:27:42/8:55 pace time back in 2008.


People around me were slowing down as we climbed the steep hill, and I found myself slowing with them. Just before I turned the corner to leave Main Street, I realized what I was doing and that I still had energy. I started to pick up the pace. I had to concentrate really hard to keep myself from slowing down again, but I was able to hold my pace to the finish.

My final time was 1:22:32/8:16 pace. A PR by more than 5 minutes, but almost 2 and a half minutes slower than my goal. It was still good enough to put me in the top quarter of all finishers and the top 10% of my age group.

The Charlottesville 10 Miler is such a huge tradition here in Charlottesville. I’m happy I was finally healthy enough to run it again this year.

Amnesty International Valentines Couples 5k

IMG_20130211_092259_779This race is held at the Old Trail Golf club in Crozet. It takes place around Valentines Day each year. The setting is beautiful, the course is challenging and everybody runs with a partner. You don’t have to actually run together, but your times are combined to determine your placement within your division. They have male/male, female/female, male/female, husband/wife and parent/child divisions.


We arrived early, because that’s just what we do. It was freezing cold with a biting wind, so we were very grateful that packet pick-up was held inside the club. We stood in line for a few minutes, until we were all informed that they were only taking race-day registrations, and that everybody who had pre-registered would have to wait.

We went and sat down for a while, then at about 7:30, got back in line. We waited and waited. Some people were getting impatient, but I figured the later we started, the warmer it would be. I wasn’t looking forward to going back outside.


Finally, at just about 8:00 (the time the race was supposed to start) the person with the race numbers finally arrived (this had been the hold-up). By 8:10 we’d picked up our numbers (no t-shirts for us, as we’d registered too late) and used the restrooms one last time.

We headed out for a warm-up. We jogged a little less than a mile and half, then made our way to the starting line. We were pretty far back when Kurt said “we always line up too far back”. I agreed, so we made our way closer to the front.

I took off at a pretty fast pace, but it was downhill and I was hoping to get a pretty decent time. This is a partner race, so my time would be added to Kurt’s time and I didn’t want to drag him down too much. It was cold and windy, but sunny. I took my hat off just before mile one.

My first mile split was 7:25. I wanted to hit mile two by 15:00. I got there at about 15:04. Mile 3 was strange. I’m still not very good at pacing myself in short races. I managed to keep my pace pretty quick, though. Running as part of a team helped me push harder than I usually do. I guess I’m willing to push a little harder when somebody else is depending on me. I could see the clock in the final stretch and was surprised to see it roll over from 22:59 to 23:00. I was definitely going to set a PR. I crossed the finish line in 23:08, shaving 43 seconds off my PR. Not bad for a hilly course on a windy day.


With a combined time of 45:22, we came in second place in the Husband/Wife division. We won two Ragged Mountain hooded sweatshirts, which we have to pick up at the shop.

It took me a while to make it out to this park, but now that I know what it has to offer, I’ve been back several times.

I like this park for my easy recovery runs. I find myself heading out there when I want to run in the woods, but don’t feel like tackling the hills at Walnut Creek. The main trail (Preddy Creek Loop) is just over three miles long, and the hills are not too steep.


The park has pit toilets, which I find convenient when I need to change out of my sweaty clothes so I can stop at Target on my way home.

IMG_20130129_100559_056In addition to hiking and running, the park is an excellent spot for mountain biking and horseback riding.

The trails do get extremely slippery in wet conditions. I made the mistake of trying to run there the day after it had rained, and found myself sliding all over the place. Not fun! So, as long as it hasn’t rained for a while, I highly recommend checking out the trails at Preddy Creek.

Directions from Charlottesville: head north on 29. Pass the Target shopping center on your left, and continue north for about four or five miles. You will go through several stoplights. At the stoplight at the intersection with Burnley Station Road, turn right. Continue on Burnley Station Road for a little less than three miles, until you see the park entrance on your left.

Cross Country Skiing at White Grass

whitegrassI somehow stumbled upon this (awesome!) place online several years ago. It has been in the back of my mind ever since.

Growing up in Massachusetts, my dad’s side of the family would rent a cabin in NH every year during February vacation. From there, we would spend our days (and sometimes evenings) cross-country skiing. My grandfather even took me on a few weekend trips to the mountains, where we’d sleep in a hostel and ski all day. I enjoyed the trips. At the time, I might have been more into making snow angels and drinking hot chocolate, but the seeds were sewn. He’d shared with me the peaceful beauty of a snow-covered world and shown me the magic of gliding through on a pair of skis. Decades may have gone by, but I have not forgotten.

I’d tried, on numerous occasions, and unsuccessfully, to get either Kurt or my sister to go with me. My friend Rebecca, I was pleasantly surprised to discover, was willing (dare I say eager?) to make the trip with me.

According to Yahoo driving directions, the trip from Charlottesville to White Grass should take just under three hours. With a stop at Starbucks and another at the Sheetz in Harrisonburg, we made it in just over three. There are a couple of steep, switch-backed mountain passes to cross. The one closest to Canaan Valley had a little bit of snow cover on it. After the turn off the main road, the roads went quickly from partially snow-covered to completely snow-covered. The parking lot was hard-packed snow. I naively figured they must throw some sand down for traction. We had no problem parking, but would later discover my naivety.

We walked up to the lodge, which was an old red barn-type building. Inside, it was warm and cozy (okay, a little cramped) with a stove in the middle of the room and tables all along the window and center of the room. On the other side, there was a window to pay and rent skis. We paid, and they asked for my license to hold until we returned the skis.


I was watching our skis while Rebecca was in the restroom when I heard somebody say “JoAnne!”. I turned and found my neighbor Mark standing in front of me. He lives less than a quarter of a mile down the road and I hadn’t seen him for several months, but I’d driven three hours into the middle of nowhere in West Virginia, and now he was standing in front of me. I’ve never known much about him, but I’ve always thought he was pretty cool. I considered my suspicions confirmed as he told me about how much he loved the place, and came as often as he could. I told him I’d never been there before, and he launched right into telling me which trails we should take. I was grateful for his suggestions, because I had no idea where to start.

and lead into the woods…


and then climbed steadily up the mountain.


There were several of these little shelters along the way, which offered a nice place to stop for a rest and snack.

The trail was wide and well-groomed. We had to pass a few people, but it didn’t feel too terribly crowded. It took me a while to get the hang of skiing again, and it was hard to glide because we were mostly climbing. I was really enjoying being in the snow-filled woods. Before making the trip, I had read that this area gets almost as much annual snowfall as upstate New York, but I had a really hard time believing it. I was thrilled to find that it was true. A thick, natural blanket of snow covered the ground, and higher up, the trees as well.IMG_20130105_121619_262IMG_20130105_122400_334

My neighbor had told us that, as long as we were fairly confident in our snowplowing skills, we could take any of the many side trails (probably skipping the black ones) back down to the lodge. The Three Mile Trail we’d come up on was the least steep way to get back down the mountain, though, and I was confident that it would test my snowplowing skills plenty. So, after a few handfuls of trailmix, we started back down the way we’d come.

The hill on the way back down was fairly moderate, but challenging and fast enough to supply a small dose of excitement. It was mostly just beautiful and a lot of fun.

When we got back down, Rebecca wanted to sit for a while and enjoy the sun. I was eager to explore more trails, so she told me to go. I took the Gandalf Glade trail for a while, then headed back to meet her for some lunch. There was a long line in the cafe, and very limited seating. Rebecca waited in the line to order our food while I scouted out a place for us to sit. I found one chair at a table full of people and figured somebody else would get up before Rebecca returned with our food. They were still there when she came over, but they saw that she needed a seat and were nice enough to get up so she could sit.

We shared a bowl of Mediterranean Chickpea soup, which was delicious. It came with two garlic bread sticks, that were also very good. We also split a hummus sandwich, a brownie and a molasses cookie. The food was all fresh and homemade and delicious. For the price, ($8.50) I thought they were a little skimpy with the hummus on the sandwich, and I would have preferred another choice for a side, in addition to the tortilla chips that came with it. Over-all, though, I was very happy with my healthy and tasty lunch. I would happily eat there again.

With full stomachs, we went back out to explore the trails through the meadows around the lodge.

IMG_20130105_144014_991IMG_20130105_144022_031 I wanted to ski as long as possible, but the sun was sinking low over the mountain, and I wanted to get back over the first mountain pass before the road had time to refreeze.

So, reluctantly, we returned our skis and headed back to the car. We quickly realized that we were stuck. I backed out fine, but as soon as I tried to head up the small incline leading out of the lot, my tires just spun and spun. We weren’t the only ones. Two other cars were stuck. Somebody had a tow rope, and offered to tow us all out. They towed the big SUV out, but there was nowhere to tie a rope to my tiny little car. Everybody worked together to push my car out. I was extremely appreciative. I still can’t believe the ski area didn’t put some gravel or something down. I guess they expect (probably rightfully so) their patrons to drive cars equipped to deal with snowy conditions.

We could not have asked for better weather, or a more perfect day of skiing. I can’t wait to go back. My next car might need to be a four wheel drive.

New Year’s Day 5k

IMG_20130106_135619_944The forecast for New Year’s day was calling for a wintry mix of precipitation. It was only overcast, though, and not terribly cold, when we arrived at Free Union and did our mile warm-up. I had done a 17 mile run two days before, and was planning to run as fast as I could without pushing too hard. I knew I wouldn’t be setting a PR, but I was expecting a better time than I’d managed for my last several races.

I thought I lined up in the middle of the pack, but when the gun went off, because of the narrow road, I found myself stuck behind several people who were barely jogging. I spent the first quarter-mile just trying to get out in the open.

I felt pretty good for the first mile. Around mile 2, I found myself behind a man dressed in Carhart pants and coat and work boots. I really hoped I’d be able to pass him.

He ended up beating me by a few seconds.

I’d say I put about the same effort into this race that I’d put into the Briargate Turkey Trot. I pushed, but not as hard as I could have. Strangely, though, I expected better results. Isn’t that the definition of insanity? Doing the same thing, but expecting different results? I did have a better time for this race, but Briargate was hillier and at elevation, so really, I’d call it a draw.

Kurt was waiting for me at the finish line. He had set a new PR. That’s a pretty good way to start the new year. We jogged another mile together, talking about what a beautiful spot it was for a race, and how nice the weather had turned out to be. The race seemed to have set a positive tone for the new year.


I finished in 24:31, which was good enough for third place in my age group. I’m not sure what I won, though. They were using a new timing system and hadn’t worked the kinks out. We were told to check the online results for age group awards, and then to pick up our prizes at Ragged Mountain Running Shop. I haven’t claimed my prize yet.

They said that they could at least announce the top 3 over-all finishers. First place went to Racheal Ward. I love it when a woman wins over-all.  When they announced the second place winner, somebody else said “wait a minute, I came in second”.  Some more discussion ensued, and it was announced that all results would be posted online.

It was pretty funny.

Twelve Days of Fitness

DSC_0019I haven’t been doing much strength training lately, but I have been eating a lot of holiday treats. I’m not going to give up the holiday treats, but I am going to try to balance things out by taking on a Twelve Days of Christmas Fitness Challenge. If you do an internet search, there are many to choose from, but I liked this one. It’s simple (no equipment needed) and it incorporates exercises for all major muscle groups.

You can click the link above to watch the You Tube video to see how all the exercises are done. You can also make it easier by starting on the number of the day instead of starting back at number one each day.
